Two iPad 3s next month? Not likely

Rumours that Apple will launch two new iPads at a trade show next month have been dismissed by company ‘insiders’.

Two iPad 3s next month?Asian news service Digitimes, a source of plenty of rumours about Apple these days, had claimed that two new iPads were scheduled for launch at the Macworld Expo conference in San Francisco on January 23.

The news service said the two iPad 3 models would have 9.7-inch screens, like the iPad and iPad 2, but would have high resolution, 1536 x 2048 pixel display. Digitimes said the only difference between the two models would be that the high-end version would have an 8-megapixel camera, while the second model would have a 5-MP camera.

However, Jim Dalrymple, writing for The Loop, dismissed the report. “I checked with a number of my sources today and an iPad 3 is not planned for release at Macworld,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, Apple blogger John Gruber said that he doubted that there would be two iPad models, other than the existing distinction between 3G and Wi-Fi-only versions.

Though Apple has announced products at Macworld in the past – most famously, the original iPhone in 2007 – the company has not participated in the show for the last two years, preferring to make announcements at its own events and on its own schedule.

Apple tends to announce updates to existing products close to the release date. The iPad 2, for example, was announced on March 2 this year – nine days before it was released in the US. With the new version of the iPad expected in the Spring, it’s unlikely that Apple would announce it so early in 2012.

However, other rumours have suggested that Apple will announce the next version of the iPad on February 24, which was the birthday of the company’s late chief executive, Steve Jobs. An announcement on that date would fit with a March release.
